Purpose Children need to be at school on Monday morning with a full stomach and ready to concentrate and study. For school staff who know the signs, it’s not hard to pick out hungry children. They’re the ones who empty the food on their lunch trays in a flash. It’s worse when there’s a weekend and children don’t get enough to eat for over 48 hours.
Plan Originally offered at Sidney's Central Elementary School, the ministry offered students that were food-insecure meal supplements for their weekend food needs. After working with the school staff to identify these students, we committed to provide a take home bag each Friday packed with non-perishable foods to supplement their weekend diet.We started distributing the food in October 2009. In 2010 we added the program at Longfellow Elementary School. in 2011 it expanded to include all four Sidney elementary schools: Longfellow, Whittier, Northwood and Emerson. While still new to Sidney, this program has been successfully implemented in many other communities. For the 2012/13 school year we will again serve all four Sidney elementary schools. Funding Grants from the Shelby County United Way, The Presbyterian Women Association and Cargill allowed us to partially stock our shelves for this Sidney effort. Additional monies have been pledged to the ministry by church members and community friends. It costs about $85 to provide these foods for one student for an entire school year.
Your sponsorship and donations allow us to commit to providing children supplemental meals for the entire school year!
Please note that all donations go directly to purchasing food for the children. Administrative, storage and transportation expenses are paid for by the our church.
